Heads Linux Distro
Meet Heads the alternative to Tails, but without system
Surely you have heard about the Tails distribution, if not, let me tell you a bit, Tails is a Linux distro that is based on Debian and what makes it special is that it forces all outgoing connections from it to the Tor network so which is an excellent option to preserve privacy. If you want to know more about Tails I leave you in link to the following article.
Well, Heads was born as a response to Tails,
taking the same approach as this, it is aimed at people who like the aspect of
controlling their privacy and anonymity on the Internet.
The init of choice is not systemd. systemd is a
great piece of software that, while it is free software, has not been audited
for security since its inception.
Being as big as it is, it is difficult to do so
and, as time passes, it becomes increasingly difficult to audit systemd. We do
not intend to disrespect or enter into the controversy over why systemd is a
bad choice. We just do not want to use it.
On the other hand the philosophy of the developers of Heads, it is simple not to use systemd, for the following reason:
The distribution a few days ago has been updated to its new version 0.4 with which it implements many changes and above all solves several errors.
Within the main changes in Heads 0.4 this has been worked hard on the Devuan SDK because it is used as a basis for the compilation of the distribution.
With this now the distro changes its base version, going to Devuan Beowulf Testing, (it would be the equivalent to Debian Buster), with which the distribution has access to the most current packages of the tools it uses.
From the package of applications that Heads offers us, we find the file manager PCManFM, the Htop process monitor, Electrum Bitcoin Wallet
Also several tools oriented to online communications, in navigation we find the Tor browser which comes with the extensions NoScript and HTTPS Everywhere.
The Thunderbird email client is included together with the Psi + XMPP client and the HexChat IRC client.
For the side of the documents we find Abiword and Gnumeric and the Evince document viewer. In multimedia playback Heads comes with the mpv media player and the LXMusic audio player.
The new init system is sysvinit combined with OpenRC. This is a modern approach to init and it works quite stable.
Given the distribution that Heads are based on, they do not include a graphical package manager, the distribution does have the APT command line utilities to search, install, delete and update packages. By default, APT is configured to extract the software from the Devian repositories.
Download Heads 0.4
No more if you have been interested in this Linux distribution and want to install it to know more about it or simply just want to try it you can download it from the following link.
Personally I can say that Heads is an excellent option to try and for those who want to remain anonymous in the network can use it thanks to its philosophy of not including any private software.
