“Familiar”, the new interface of Ubuntu MATE 18.04
Martin Wimpress, the leader of the Ubuntu MATE project, has presented the new interface of Ubuntu MATE.
An interface that has been baptized as "Familiar" and that will be present in versions superior to Ubuntu MATE 18.04 and in versions that have MATE 1.20 or higher.
This new interface of MATE is minimalist, reducing the number of menus and retaking the quick menu that in other versions of Ubuntu MATE was present.
Familiar is a new interface that replaces the traditional MATE panel with a quick menu and several direct access applets. Being a more functional and usable option for many users. Although we must also say that with it, Ubuntu MATE stops having the appearance of Gnome 2 that so much like the most traditional users.
Now, this new interface of MATE can be changed by other interfaces like Muttiny itself, the interface that resembles the old Unity desktop. In addition to the new interface, Ubuntu MATE 18.04 will bring a bug fix in Ubuntu Boutique and Ubuntu Welcome, the exclusive applications of the official flavor.
The Global Menu has also been improved with more support within the desktop.
Something that happens thanks to the GTK 3+ libraries, the latest libraries that allow users to correctly use programs written for Gnome. The HUD, Atril or Marco menu are some of the tools that have also been updated and corrected to be more stable and functional.
All this will be present in the next version of Ubuntu MATE LTS, that is, the version that will be released on April 26. An LTS version that will use MATE as the default desktop.
But if you really can not wait to have this version, you can always download the ISO Beta image of Ubuntu MATE 18.04 and try it on a virtual machine, something safe and quick to do.
